    1. We sure have been! After all we can’t just be going out every two days for food like we used to. (But of course some of that was just the nature of our shopping – buying fresh food only as needed)

  1. It sounds terrible, wasting that much food. It happens everywhere. When we go to weddings and other such functions, we see people not eating all that had been served and it all goes into the garbage bin. We keep wondering do not people know what they want to eat and how much they want to eat. It is terrible when elsewhere people are going hungry.

    1. I agree. Some organizations in our city are working with restaurants to pick up unused food which is good. Household waste is a huge problem here. There’s a tendency here to shop infrequently – sometimes weekly or less and that can mean that things go bad. And in our case as I said, sometimes we just forget to eat something or don’t eat it in time. This habit of ours has changed a lot since lockdown as we work very hard to use everything and eat all of our leftover food so that nothing is wasted and we don’t have to shop so often. But volunteering at the food bank also gives me a good perspective. I see how much need there is in our city with some people having to take whatever food is given to them. Meanwhile, we might buy something and then think “Hmmm – I don’t really want that tonight…” and then find it had gone bad. I am glad to have been given a bit of perspective on what a terrible habit this is.

One thing I’m really upset to hear about is that in some cities and some stores, they not only throw food away but they also make it so needy can’t even pick it from the garbage if they wanted to. If someone is desperate enough to be getting food from the garbage, that is a huge need. And yet, some stores lock their trash bins while others pour bleach or other poisonous or smelly things on to the food to make it inedible. I am not even religious and still I have to say this is a big sin.
