Echoes of the Past

Even little choices we make have long term effects. Don't believe me? Look at your nearest vacant lot.

Spring is finally really in full swing here with trees green and flowering and the air warming up. I’ve gone out for a bike ride two days in a row in just shorts and a jersey. This is after just a few days earlier in gloves, merino wool pants and shirt, jacket, headband and gloves. We even had snow flurries on Monday.

Near our house is a vacant lot. Years back there was a small bungalow there that was demolished with a low-rise building promised. For whatever reason, the building never went up and now the lot remains fenced in. Mother nature is taking over – you can really see it.

But look closer. The house and the family who lived there may be gone, but they’re not totally forgotten. One autumn day many years back, someone planted tulip bulbs.

Here’s the house in 2011 along with its neighbour that was also demolished.

And you can see from the backyard that there was a little bit of floral landscaping going on:

in the summer of 1997 when Sage’s mom had come to stay with us while Sage was pregnant with Daegan I decided I wanted a small garden in our backyard. I dug up a tiny rectangle of our lawn and planted a few vegetables. That time was so hectic that looking back I’m not even sure what grew and what didn’t. But a look at that same backyard shows that little plot was still being used as a garden in 2008.

What an illustration of the long term effects of even our small choices – imagine what happens with the big ones.
